Pilot safe after landing experimental aircraft without power

FAIRFAX, Vt. --A Stowe pilot was uninjured Saturday after making an emergency landing in a field with his experimental airplane, police said.

Peter Hebert, 48, left the Allen Home Airstrip in South Hero at about 1 p.m. Saturday on his way to the Stowe-Morrisville airport when the engine on his Kitfox single engine airplane failed while flying at about 3,000 feet, state police said.

"In the four minutes that followed, Mr. Hebert sought and located a field in which he could put his aircraft down," said a state police news release.

The only damage to the aircraft was to its left landing gear.

The reason for the engine failure is undetermined.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified, police said.
