HARDWICK, Vt.—Police in Hardwick say an officer suffered minor injuries when a car he had stopped struck him and its driver fled.

Officer Kevin Blanchard sustained cuts, bruises and a leg injury early Wednesday when a white Subaru he'd pulled over suddenly backed up, striking him twice. The driver fled.

Blanchard, who was treated and released at Copley Hospital, returned to work later in the day wearing a leg brace.

"We want to get this guy, because if he did this once to a police officer, he most likely will do it again," said Police Chief Joe LaPorte.

LaPorte says Blanchard is lucky he wasn't seriously hurt.

No arrests have been made.
