Man, dog rescued from car on Lake Champlain that went through ice

MILTON, Vt. --A man and his dog are safe after being rescued from Lake Champlain after the car they were riding in broke through the ice off the Milton shore.

The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says the car went through the ice about 150 yards offshore from the Van Everest Fishing Access Area on Thursday afternoon.

Two Milton firefighters wearing survival suits helped the man from the partially submerged car at about 4 p.m.

Milton Police identified the man as 80-year-old Arthur Wells of Milton.

About an hour after the man was rescued a small dog was brought to shore.

Shortly after the dog was rescued the car fell further through the ice.
