Campaign finance veto override falls short
MONTPELIER, Vt. --For the second year in a row, the Vermont House has decided by a one-vote margin not to override Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of a campaign finance bill.
The 99-51 vote was one shy of the two-thirds majority House Democrats and Progressives needed to reverse Douglas' veto of a bill that would have set new limits on contributions to political candidates.
The bill was less restrictive than a Vermont campaign finance law ruled unconstitutional two years ago by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Douglas said he objected to the new bill's limits on contributions to candidates from political parties. ![]()
