BURLINGTON, Vt.—A 33-year-old Massachusetts man is being held on charges he set a fire in the Burlington intervale that destroyed a historic 19th century barn.

Court documents say Edward T. Westley of Medfield, Mass., acknowledged setting the fire Sunday as a way to keep warm. The document say he'd broken into the barn to look for food.

Westley is being held for lack of $100,000 bail.

The court documents say Westley has a history of bipolar disorder and experiences delusions that he is being pursued by the FBI and CIA.

Public Defender Sarah Kouassi asked for a competency evaluation for Westley.

If convicted of the arson charges, Westley could be sentenced to 10 years in prison.
