Suspect in Barre drug slaying taken into custody in Mexico
BARRE, Vt.—Police say a 35-year-old Bethel man wanted in connection with a 2006 drug killing in Barre turned himself in to U.S. officials in Mexico.
Jonathan Whalley turned himself in on April 19. He is now being held in Texas, awaiting extradition to Vermont.
A warrant for Whalley's arrest was issued after he failed to show up for a court hearing in Barre in January.
Whalley was charged with being an accessory after the fact in the May 2006 beating death of 33-year-old James Saunders. In September 2006, Whalley told police where to find Saunders' body in Vershire.
Seven people were originally charged in the case. Police say Saunders' killing grew out of a dispute between drug dealers.![]()
