RUTLAND, Vt.—Vermont's largest cable television company is expanding its operations into 53 towns.

The line extension by Comcast is part of an expansion of 220 miles of fiber-optic lines this year that will bring cable to some sparsely populated communities such as Tinmouth, Brownington and Lincoln.

Comcast agreed to expand its operations when it took over cable operations from Adelphia Communications. It is due to add another 300 miles of cable next year.

Stephen Wark of the Vermont Department of Public Service says it's good news for Vermonters.

But Tinmouth Select Board member Cathy Reynolds estimates the service will only reach a third of her community.
