PITTSFORD, Vt.—A 26-year-old horse was recovering Tuesday after firefighters rescued it from an open well.
Kyrie, a mare, fell six or seven feet into the well Monday night and was up to her neck in water when firefighters arrived, Fire Chief Tom Hooker said.
Rescuers used a hose with rope and a tractor to pull the horse from the well. Afterward, the animal lay on its side for a few minutes before standing up and walking to its stall. It suffered a laceration to one leg and a puncture wound to its right flank, but was otherwise expected to recover.
Hooker said the horse suffered from hypothermia and exhaustion after struggling for up to three hours before help arrived.
