MONTPELIER, Vt.—Some Vermont commuters are walking, bicycling or taking the bus to work this week.

It's part of the Way to Go! challenge, sponsored by a number of transportation related groups. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 500,000 pounds in a week.

By Wednesday, preliminary estimates posted on the challenge's Web site showed with 567 organizations and at 2,738 people participating, under 200,000 pounds would be saved. But those numbers are likely to go up when all the participants log their commutes. The effort is expected to save at least 9,640 gallons of gas, or $34,705 at current average gas prices.
