BURLINGTON, Vt.—Philanthropist Lois McClure, who joined her late husband in donating $2.5 million to found the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center on the city's Lake Champlain waterfront, is donating another $1 million as an endowment.

No building, "even one as beautiful as ECHO," can last long without an endowment to keep it strong, McLure said in announcing her gift on Friday.

McClure, now 82, joined her husband J. Warren McClure in making the earlier gift to the ECHO center when it was founded five years ago. J. Warren McClure, a former owner of The Burlington Free Press, died in 2004.
