MONTPELIER, Vt.—Record numbers of Americans are taking public transportation to work, trying to beat the high gasoline prices. And Vermont appears to be no exception.
Officials at the Chittenden County Transportation Authority say ridership is up about seven percent over last year, with some routes, like the Montpelier Link bus, up as much as 36 percent.
Chuck Gallagher -- public transit chief at the state Agency of Transportation -- says growth in ridership is being seen on all 12 of Vermont's public bus systems.
Meanwhile, state spending on public transportation has grown by more than 50 percent since 2004 -- to nearly $20 million.
