BURLINGTON, Vt.—A 23-year-old Colchester man will serve no jail time and have no criminal record if he stays out of trouble for two years, despite pleading guilty in the knifing of an off-duty policy officer.

Authorities say Jeffrey Chamberlin followed his estranged girlfriend to a home in Milton last year in hopes of reuniting with her only to find that it was the home of Jason Nokes. Chamberlin said he was forced to defend himself with the knife after Nokes angrily confronted him.

Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan attributed the leniency of Chamberlin's sentence to the fact that eyewitnesses contradicted Nokes' claim that the knife attack was unprovoked.

Nokes had surgery on his hand and has returned to duty as a Winooski police officer.
