MONTPELIER, Vt.—Vermont state officials say up to 4,000 residents may be helped by an extension of unemployment benefits announced this week.
A compromise extending the benefits an extra 13 weeks was agreed to by President Bush and the Congress on Monday, and Gov. Jim Douglas one day later signed papers allowing the Vermont Department of Labor to manage the program.
Patricia Moulton-Powden, the department's commissioner, says it will be sending letters to Vermonters who are expected to qualify for the program.
She says up to 4,000 Vermonters are expected to be eligible for the extended benefits.
