MONTPELIER, Vt.—Vermont state officials are warning canoeists, kayakers and others to avoid a stretch of the Winooski River below where a bridge undergoing reconstruction fell into the river this week.

John Zicconi of the state Agency of Transportation says debris from the bridge has become lodged in an area of the river known as the Junkyard Rapids, posing a significant hazard to paddlers.

A bridge in the process of being removed for reconstruction along U.S. Route 2 between Middlesex and Moretown fell into the river this week after construction barges being used in the project were jarred loose by high water. No one was injured in that mishap.

Zicconi says debris will be removed from the river after high water subsides.
