WATERBURY, Vt.—High water caused by recent heavy rains is prompting a local company to put off its volunteer effort to clean up the Winooski River.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters had planned to deploy 150 employees to clean up a stretch of the Winooski River between the Middlesex Dam and Waterbury.

But due to recent heavy rains, the river is running dangerously high. And a company official says the volunteer effort -- originally set to begin Monday -- will be delayed.

The company's effort is part of a nationwide river cleanup campaign organized by the environmental group American Rivers.
