ST. ALBANS, Vt.—A 23-year-old Franklin man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he has been stealing catalytic converters from vehicles in the area.

Police say they arrested Kurt L. Grenon on Thursday in connection with the theft of a catalytic converter from a car in St. Albans on July 21, and later charged him with nine other, similar thefts.

The converters reduce toxic emissions from vehicle engines. They've become a favorite target of thieves recently because they're easy to steal and contain small amounts of palladium, platinum and rhodium -- all precious metals.

Grenon was being held on bail after being charged with 10 counts of burglary and 10 counts of possessing stolen property.
