UNDERHILL, Vt.—Most residents say they were used to the mortar and artillery rounds booming out from the Vermont Army National Guard's Ethan Allen Firing Range. But the addition of a small-arms firing facility has some up in arms.
About 60 people turned out for a Selectboard meeting this week to present a petition with 129 signatures complaining about the racket emanating from the military base since the addition of its small-arms firing range last summer.
Tim Pedrotty, who has lived near the base with little complaint for 27 years, says the quality of life in the neighborhood has significantly decreased.
But another neighbor, Maria Alexander, says her sacrifice is minuscule compared to that of the soldiers at the range training to serve their country.
