MONTPELIER, Vt.—It's going to cost at least $50,000 to clean up asbestos found in Montpelier's Main Street Middle School.

But officials won't be able to offer the city a more precise figure until next week.

The actual clean up and air testing could take up to two weeks once a cleanup plan is approved by the Vermont Health Department.

It's unclear if the cleanup will affect the start of the school year.

A Health Department inspector closed the school earlier this week after discovering that asbestos-contaminated tiles were being improperly removed from the floors.

The concern was the tile removal process could release asbestos fibers into the air.

People who inhale asbestos dust can suffer lung ailments years after exposure.
