Town of Rutland ponders local tax

RUTLAND, Vt. --Voters in the town of Rutland could vote this November on whether to levy a local 1 percent sales tax.

State law allows towns to collect a 1 percent local option tax on retail sales, meals and alcohol, and rooms.

Select Board Chairman Stan Rhodes says the board is considering having all three possibilities on the ballot.

One estimate says the tax would raise $1.4 million for the town.

Town resident and former state representative Donald Chioffi says the tax could help reduce the property taxes of homeowners, perhaps as much as $500.
