ESSEX, Vt.—Police aren't saying whether the gunman in the fatal shooting of a retired professor will be charged, or who he is.

John Reiss, a 73-year-old father of seven who taught English at St. Michael's College in Colchester, was hit by a stray bullet by someone firing a rifle during a target practice nearby Tuesday. A single bullet passed through a window and hit him in the torso as he was eating dinner in his Old Stage Road home, killing him.

Essex Police Capt. Bradley LaRose said Thursday four men were in the shooting party in a wooded area about 650 feet from Reiss' house. The rifle that apparently fired the shot was being passed around by the men, who were taking turns shooting it.
