Gloucester police arrested and charged the head of the city’s firefighters union Friday after he was accused of having a relationship with a 13-year-old girl, the Gloucester Daily Times reported. The Times reported that 37-year-old Clinton J. Carroll was charged at 9 a.m. after turning himself in to police. He was arraigned shortly after his arrest, pleading not guilty to two counts of indecent assault and battery of a child under 14 and two counts of reckless endangerment. Judge Joseph Jennings set bail at $5,000. Fire Chief Phil Dench told the Times that Carroll was suspended without pay for five days, pending a civil service hearing. Mayor Carolyn Kirk said that while Carroll deserved a hearing, the city would move for termination.WESTMINSTER
Suspect shoots self in standoff, police say
A suspect in the death of a woman whose body was found in Fitchburg Friday shot himself yesterday during a standoff with police at a Westminster motel, authorities said. Ha Yang, 25, was being sought after the discovery of the woman in his 80 Grove St. apartment at about 7:30 p.m. Friday, said Tim Connolly, a spokesman for Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Swollen rivers may be danger to boaters
Vermont authorities are warning that the state’s rain-swollen rivers could pose a danger for the next few weeks to boaters. Captain Ron Hubbard of the Brattleboro Fire Department Dive Team said the rainy weather makes the rivers unpredictable. Canoeists and kayakers are being urged to use life vests and head protection. Rescuers this week rescued a 17-year-old girl trapped in the Black River. (AP)© Copyright 2009 Globe Newspaper Company.
