BURLINGTON, Vt.—Police in Burlington, Vt., have started offering the public a new way to get updates on traffic problems and crime alerts, and other Chittenden County agencies are considering a similar move.

Burlington's police department has signed up with Nixle.com, which allows officers to send updates about meetings, emergencies and other information to a Web site. People can receive the information via e-mail and text message, or Twitter and can specify certain areas of the city.

South Burlington Police Chief Trevor Whipple told The Burlington Free Press his department also is testing the system, and several other area departments are considering it.
