HARTFORD, Vt.—A sewer plant expansion project has turned up some unlikely things in Hartford -- including artifacts that could be thousands of years old.
The archaeological dig, which is part of the planned site of a White River Treatment Plant expansion, was required by the federal government. Charles Knight, assistant director of the University of Vermont's consulting archaeology program, says non-native stone flakes found in the soil suggest that people occupied the river bank there, and that the number and age of them make the site historically significant.
Now, the town and the project's engineers have to wait and see how the discovery will affect the project. Knight tells the Valley News that the site shouldn't be built on, if possible.
