WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt.—A Maine man who had his conviction for a 1997 Royalton home invasion overturned by the Vermont Supreme Court has pleaded guilty a second time.
Fifty-four-year-old Stewart Jones didn't get out of prison after the conviction was overturned, but his new plea gives him a shorter minimum sentence.
The Sanford, Maine, man wasn't charged until eight years after Warren and Catherine Williams, who were both 76, were assaulted in their home and robbed.
Jones entered a plea deal in 2007, but the court later ruled the statute of limitations had expired and overturned the conviction.
He pleaded guilty Monday to kidnapping.
Jones's earlier conviction carried a sentence of 18 to 22 years in prison. The new sentence is 10 to 24 years.![]()
