BURLINGTON, Vt.—A workshop in Wisconsin brought some good news and some bad news to Vermont dairy farmers.
Experts at Friday's conference said there's not enough competition for all the liquid milk being produced. However, the price farmers get paid for their milk has gone up in the past few months.
WCAX-TV says dairy farmers in Vermont are working their way through the worst economic crisis in the past 50 years. Reasons for the crisis include the industry's antiquated pricing system and market consolidation.
Vermont Agriculture Secretary Roger Albee says farmers are doing better than they were a few months ago because the price has come up somewhat. But he says there's still an oversupply of milk and it only takes a 2 percent oversupply to drop the price 20 to 30 percent.
