ADDISON, Vt.—A project to replace a bridge across Lake Champlain between Vermont and New York is giving archaeologists a chance to unearth the rich history of the area.

Experts are conducting a $500,000 study of the Chimney Point area on the Vermont side of the bridge in the town of Addison.

The Burlington Free Press says that in the last 10 weeks experts have been able to confirm the location of a French fort, built in 1731, and they've found other historical artifacts, including spear heads and stone tools, some of which date back 9,000 years.

The former Lake Champlain bridge was closed last October after it was deemed unsafe. It was imploded in December and work is getting under way on a replacement.
