BURLINGTON, Vt.—The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is planning to open a new regional health clinic to serve northern Vermont this month.

Sen. Bernie Sanders says the Newport clinic will be the sixth similar satellite health facility opened by the VA hospital in White River Junction. Others are in Bennington, Brattleboro, Colchester, Rutland, and Littleton, N.H.

Sanders, a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, says he urged the VA to open another clinic in the Newport area after hearing from Northeast Kingdom veterans.

The clinic, which is expected to open this month, will be open Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and two Wednesdays every month from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours could expand based on need.
