MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Vermont's Middlebury College will be getting a new boat for research on Lake Champlain.

The boat will be paid for with a $1.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

The boat will be built by All American Marine in Bellingham, Wash. The vessel itself will cost $1.5 million. The rest of the grant will be used to buy instruments.

Once the boat has been built it will be taken by ship to Florida. Then a group of Middlebury professors will sail it north through the intracoastal waterway to New York, up the Hudson River and through the Champlain Canal to Lake Champlain.

The new boat will replace a 32-foot lobster boat.

The boat is scheduled to be delivered in 2012.
