MONTPELIER, Vt.—Vermont is getting $300,000 in a multi-state settlement with Publishers Clearing House over allegations its mailings deceived consumers.

Thursday's development followed allegations that PCH's mailings in recent years violated an earlier order settling states' consumer fraud allegations. A total of 32 states is receiving $3.5 million.

Under the settlement, the Port Washington, N.Y., company will need to further restrict certain kinds of through-the-mail promotions, as well as screen more of its customers to make sure they are not disoriented, are not making excessive purchases and are not under a misimpression that buying helps win a drawing.
