MONTPELIER — Two barracks buildings at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan are now monuments to two Vermont National Guard soldiers killed in combat.
According to the US Army, the buildings were dedicated last week to Staff Sergeant Steven Deluzio, 25, of Glastonbury, Conn., and Sergeant Tristan Southworth, 21, of Walden.
The two soldiers were killed Aug. 22 after their unit was attacked by insurgents in Afghanistan’s Paktika Province. Plaques engraved with the images of the two soldiers will be mounted on the buildings.
About 1,500 Vermont National Guard members are in the process of returning home after a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.
A third Vermont soldier was killed in July in a separate incident.
