Grandmother underfed child, officials say

A 46-year-old Vermont woman is facing charges she didn’t give her 1-year-old grandchild enough to eat. June Sumner pleaded not guilty Monday to a misdemeanor count of cruelty to a child under 10. The Department of Children and Families was alerted by people who ate at Sumner’s home last summer. Sumner allegedly told investigators the child had trouble keeping down solid food. The child’s mother, girlfriend of one of Sumner’s sons, told investigators Sumner denied food if the children misbehaved. The child and a sibling are reportedly in state custody and doing fine.
