Vermont ski areas are hoping what's been the third-snowiest winter on record will nudge the skier-visit total over the 4 million mark.

Vermont Ski Areas Association's Parker Riehle says ski areas are trending in that direction, but he's not speculating on a final figure. There are still six weeks of skiing left.

The Times-Argus of Barre says Vermont's 18 ski areas enjoyed three strong holiday periods -- Christmas-New Years, Martin Luther King and Presidents week. There's been lots of snow, including last week's storm that broke a record for March with 25.8 inches.

The National Weather Service in Burlington calls this winter the third snowiest on record with 124.3 inches.

Magic Mountain in Londonderry says skier visits this season are up by 15-20 percent. Stowe Mountain Resort also reports a double-digit increase over last season.
