BURLINGTON, Vt.—Former Vermont state legislator Mark Mitchell has died following a battle with lung cancer. He was 77.

Mitchell, a Democrat from Barnard, was elected three times to the Vermont House of Representatives. He resigned in May during his fifth year in the Legislature because of his illness.

Mitchell, an architect, was born in London and emigrated to the United States in 1946. He moved to Vermont in 1986.

He served on the House Natural Resources and Energy Committee and said he was most pleased with steps the Legislature has taken to reduce Vermont's carbon footprint and plan for its energy future.

The Burlington Free Press reports (http://bfpne.ws/uAQbL9) House Speaker Shap Smith said Mitchell's engaging and charming personality made him an effective advocate and universally popular among his peers.
