RUTLAND, Vt.—THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Central Vermont Public Service says 1,789 customers remain without power due to the early-season snowstorm.

The total late Sunday morning is down from more than 6,300 earlier in the day.

The storm is also causing problems on Vermont's highways. State troopers from the Brattleboro barracks responded to more than 20 weather-related crashes or vehicles off the road on Interstate 91 and Route 9. No serious injuries were reported.

Vermont appears to have escaped the worst of the storm in northern New England, while portions of New Hampshire and Mainer were the hardest hit. The National Weather Service says the highest total was 9.5 inches in Springfield, and central and eastern parts of the state were also hit. Montpelier got only 1.5 inches, and the Burlington airport reports one-tenth of an inch.
