MONTPELIER, Vt.—Vermont's Agency of Transportation has earned national recognition for use of new technologies to get information about winter road conditions to motorists quickly.

ITS America awarded Vermont second place for "best new innovative practices," for a system of sensors that check road conditions and post messages on roadside message boards as conditions change.

Vermont's project placed second to a traffic monitoring system being deployed in Chicago.

Transportation Secretary Brian Searles says Vermont's system not only helps to alert drivers to changing conditions, but gets the same information to his agency's crews so they can respond more quickly to trouble spots.
