MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—A Middlebury College political science professor is stepping down after pleading no contest to embezzlement charges.

Police said 46-year-old Kateri Carmola took $4,800 from the Salisbury Historical Society over a three-month period last year when she served as treasurer, purportedly to pay for student field trips. The money has been paid back.

The Burlington Free Press reports (http://bfpne.ws/tKN4kc) she sent an email to colleagues and her students last week that she plans to resign, effective Dec. 31. A college spokeswoman said she will remain associated with the college as a visiting scholar through June 2013, but will be on leave during that period.

Carmola had pleaded no contest in July, when she was given a deferred sentence and placed on probation for 18 months.

The college had no further comment.
