Historic Vt covered bridge to close for repairs
MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—An historic Vermont covered bridge is closing for repairs.
The Pulp Mill Covered Bridge between Middlebury and Weybridge is scheduled to close on Tuesday and remain closed through mid-November.
The bridge across the Otter Creek was built in 1820 and is one of only a handful of two-lane or doubled-barreled covered bridges in the country.
The work will include replacing the deteriorated bridge members, installing new siding and a metal roof, repairing the substructure and rebuilding the roadway approach.
A pedestrian bridge nearby will stay open for much of the construction, except on days when it must be closed to allow a crane working on the covered bridge to operate safely.
The project is expected to cost about $1.6 million.
