BURLINGTON, Vt.—Vermont state officials are reporting 43 opiate-related deaths last year.

The Burlington Free Press says the total ( http://bfpne.ws/Aa0iW9) is lower than the figure reported last week by the Vermont Department of Public Safety Commissioner Keith Flynn.

The commissioner explained this weekend that the previous figure reported, 98, is the total of all drug-related deaths in the state in 2011.

Of the 98 drug deaths, prescription opiates accounted for 43, and rest were the result of other drugs including heroin, anti-coagulants and drugs that couldn't be identified.
