NEWPORT, Vt.—A northern Vermont county has been seeing a surge in embezzlement cases.

At least four cases are now pending in Orleans County.

The Caledonian-Record ( http://bit.ly/A3xd9n) says a 41-year-old man is accused of stealing $2,602 from the Northern Umpires Association, a 34-year-old woman is charged with embezzling $6,100 from the Albany Fire Department while serving as treasurer, and a 46-year-old woman is accused of taking $45,800 from the University of Vermont Extension.

The newspaper says most of the defendants said they took the money out of financial desperation and intended to repay it.

The latest embezzlement case involves a 37-year-old Newport woman charged with taking $4,700 from a convenience store where she worked. She said the money went to feed her drug habit and her children and to heat her home.
