MONTPELIER, Vt.—Sales of `I Am Vermont Strong' commemorative license plates have been brisk since they were introduced in February in response to Tropical Storm Irene. On Thursday, Gov. Peter Shumlin marked a milestone by buying the 25-thousandth one to be produced.

At a news conference, Shumlin presented the plate to Barre Fire Capt. Keith Cushman, with thanks to him and other first responders around Vermont for their work responding to last year's natural disasters.

Proceeds from sales of the $25 plates, which have been sold at supermarkets, ski areas and other businesses, are going to the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund.

Shumlin says the sale of the 25,000 plates means the campaign is well on its way toward its fundraising goal of $1 million.
