BURLINGTON, Vt.—Anita Weston waited a long time to graduate from high school -- a little more than a half century -- but she finally got her place in a Vermont high school's commencement ceremony.

The 69-year-old Weston, who's spent the last 20 years studying with Vermont Adult Learning, was among the 295 graduates at the Friday morning ceremony in the Burlington High School gym. As she rolled up to the dais in a wheelchair to receive her diploma, Weston got a warm burst of applause.

The Burlington Free Press (http://bfpne.ws/NG0EOt) says Weston had to leave school when she was 14 so she could help her mother. She only spent six weeks in high school, but decided to finish.

Weston was recently was diagnosed with lung cancer and has begun radiation therapy.
