Cosby: Brutally honest or elitist snob?
|
Earlier this month Bill Cosby took a segment of the black community to task on issues from their grammar to complaints about police brutality. Some people said he was being brutally honest, while others said his remarks were a classist, elitist attack on the poor. What do you think? Mr. Cosby was simply telling it like it is. Unfortunately, the black community is no different than any other in the United States when it comes to blaming everyone but the face in the mirror for their problems. How is THAT for equality?!
Mark
There was absolutely nothing wrong with what Mr. Cosby said; He speaks the truth.
Linda
It is about time some one told the truth. I agree with everything Cosby said.
Lindsey
I agree with Mr. Cosby. He was just saying what many others are thinking.
Karen
I think Bill Cosby is absolutely correct in what he said. I agree with him 100%, he is telling it like it is and if people can't deal with it that is their own problem.

the truth hurts doesn't it? he's not saying anything wrong, bad, or dis-respectful, what he said was, get yourself together. educate and care for your kids. teach your kids the value of self respect and an education. watch the local news on any given night and what do you see, 14-15 year old girls hanging out with a 22yr old man at 1:00am caught in a shooting. Are you kidding me? WHERE ARE THE PARENTS? Don't give me the "I have to work for a living" either. Everyone I know does too and we're not caught in a shooting! I think what he said was correct. I think he said it well, and I support him 100%. !

I think he was being honest and merely trying to point out areas that communities need to focus.

Nobody likes it when you ruffle feathers to get a message across. Look at what happens to political figures when they criticize the president, or criticize a new government policy. I believe in free speech, and if Cosby was willing to accept the backlash from his comments--in other words, that the point was so important to risk being labeled "elitist"--then we should all pay attention. Very rarely do intelligent people risk their reputation and career to make a highly charged statement, so it must be of importance for him. Bill Cosby is a very intelligent person, and if he thought it was worth going out on a limb to get his message across, I think we should all at least think about it for a moment. Think about it, and then judge him as elitist, if you like. But, I just think he is pointing out a problem that he sees.

I believe Bill Cosby is right on point. I would check the sources of the criticism. I'm sure the majority of the negative feedback is from those that fit this criteria. He has done too much for the African-American community to receive any lashings for his comments. I don't think he should apologize for his "matter-of-fact" statements.

I think Bill Cosby worked hard to be where he is today. He rose up from the discrimination of the past when he was a child, and now is not only successful in Hollywood (which doesn't make you intelligent, or informed, but rich), but is a college graduate with a Master's degree! As an educated minority man, he has every right to be brutally honest, and, quite frankly, angry at the state of some minority societies. If it were me, I'd be angry too...
