Cosby: Brutally honest or elitist snob?

Earlier this month Bill Cosby took a segment of the black community to task on issues from their grammar to complaints about police brutality. Some people said he was being brutally honest, while others said his remarks were a classist, elitist attack on the poor. What do you think?

BRUTALLY HONEST!!!,,, just telling it like it is! Good job bill!

Ed

Hometown Norton I believe Bill Cosby was honest in his opinion of black students and their parents. Sooner or later people have to take responsibility for their actions. If children are raised speaking slang or a foreign lanbguage they will not automatically speak proper english when they join the work force or try to go on to higher education. This only limits their ability for advancement.

Brutal honesty that applies to not only just unmotivated, uneducated/undereducated black citizens, but to everyone who fits that bill that does not take pride in who they are by taking advantage of available educational tools which will allow them to advance, excel and succeed.

It's about time someone said it out loud. He is a smart, educated man and he spoke the truth!

Gina

I think he has been there and seen it all. He has every right to make those comments.

Bill Cosby has always spoke from the hip. Why should now be any different? His shows have carved a way for the Black Community. Without his foresight and equal opportunity of his own race, mainstream America may still be ignornant to how Black people are just like the rest of "us". He should be hailed for his past achievements and for his present thoughts, whether accepted or not, because both have been truthful.

I think he was right on target. Some folks believe the world owes them something, All they have to do is sit around and wait for the hand outs etc. Sometimes the truth hurts! They need to take Bills' advice, get a life and earn their keep!

David

I think Bill Cosby was just brutally honest. People don't want to hear that it is their fault that they are where they are. They want to have someone to blame and someone to take care of them. Hence all of the government handouts and special programs for the poor. Why go out and work harder when someone will keep giving you money to stay put where you are. Might as well join a union and never have to work harder than the laziest person.

Paul

In my opinion, Cosby had some valid points, BUT, he made a huge mistake by separating himself from less fortunate African-Americans by using the term "these people". Needless to say, I'm not the Cos fan that I used to be.

Mr. Cosby's comments hit a nerve and increased the public debate (and, hopefully at some point, will inspire thoughtful discourse) on this issue. Agree or disagree with his views in whole or in part, anything that gets people thinking and talking about such important issues is most welcome. If you disagree with his views, that's fine; let's be the angels of our better nature and disagree constructively. Who knows, perhaps Mr. Cosby's stirring the pot this way may actually lead to some positive action. My respect for and admiration of Mr. Cosby, which was already ample, has been augmented by his recent gutsy public stance. I admire him even further for having the mettle to stand his ground and not give into the politically correct forces of public nature.
