MESSAGE BOARD A presidential resume
Do you think military experience is crucial for a presidential resume? If not, what kind of experience should a president have?
Page 1 now it is,we currently have a pres. who deserted his military unit, we neeed a leader not a coward jim, venice fl. I don't believe a president must have military experience, but a president who has avoided serving in the military does not have credibility when it comes to making the decision to send Americans into harms way. I would not vote for such a candidate. Susan, Cambridge I don't feel that Military experience is need to be president. Considering many many of our great President had none. What I'd like to see is a canidate that is honesty and intergrity, these are qualities that are absent in most the have the monetary backing need in this day in age. Honesty; canidate tell us his/her opinion on an issue and not what they think we want to hear. Intergrity; admit when they make a mistake don't try to side step the issue or cover it up. Robley, Weymouth No, military experience is not necessary. Brains would help! And it would help to have a president who is not fighting his fathers' battles. Kathy, Lowell Military experience is NOT crucial for a presidential resume. INTELLIGENCE, experience, empathy, WISDOM, A PLAN PLUS ABILITY TO PERSUADE others are more important!! James, Port Haywood, VA Military experience is not required. EXECUTIVE experience is essential. That's why so many of our Presidents have been governors. Bruce, Newton, MA Military experience for a Presidential candidate is only important to the Sunbelt states especially in the states of the former Confederacy where love of military, guns and settling of scores by violence is in-bred in the culture. Thanks to our electoral college system these states get more than their fair share of political clout in a Presidential election and so candidates have to toe the military line if they want more than the Northeast and California. The Boston Globe and other so-called "liberal" media may not want to hear this put in such stark terms and fingering of particular regions in this way but believe me this is the way they feel toward the us since 1861 and still do, 9/11 notwithstanding. Joseph, Jersey City Military experience provides a perspective and "toughening-up" not provided in other walks of life. While not necessary (e.g. Lincoln) it can provide an important background for decision making. It does not guarantee good decisions (e.g. Carter, Nixon, Johnson), but the worst president of the past 58 years, Clinton, was the only one without military experience. Charles, Freehold, NJ;Pocassett,MA Yes Dean P, Port Hope Military experience is helpful to the extent it allows the President to understand the history and critical role of the miiltary. What is more important than the President's background is that he/she comprehend that the primary mission of the federal government is national security, not re-distribution of income and expanding social programs.
