Former outfielder Tom Saffell dies at 91

SARASOTA, Fla. — Tom ­Saffell, a former major league outfielder and longtime president of the Gulf Coast Rookie League, died last week at 91.

The Sarasota Herald-­Tribune said he developed pneumonia after having surgery for a broken hip.

Mr. Saffell spent parts of four seasons from 1949 to 1955 with the Pirates and the Athletics, hitting .238 with six homers in 271 games. He played 17 seasons in the minors.

He was president of the Gulf Coast Rookie League from 1979 to 2009 .end of story marker
