WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — There are more tanning salons in Florida than McDonald’s or CVS stores and their widespread use poses a public health risk, a new report warns.

Dr. Robert Kirsner, vice chairman of the University of Miami dermatology department, said his goal was to find out whether communities with more tanning salons also had more of the deadliest type of skin cancer, melanoma.

Earlier studies have found people who start tanning-bed use before age 30 increase their risk of melanoma by 75 percent.
