Burton Lifland, 84; presided in Madoff bankruptcy case

NEW YORK — A New York federal bankruptcy judge who has presided over the Bernard Madoff bankruptcy case for the past five years has died.

Clerk of Court Vito Genna announced Monday that Burton R. Lifland died Sunday after a brief illness. He was 84.

Judge Lifland was the former chief bankruptcy judge in Manhattan and former chief judge of Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
