The alleged gunman in Friday night’s shooting at the University of California Santa Barbara campus also stabbed his three roommates in their home before beginning his rampage, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters Saturday night.
“It was a pretty horrific crime scene” at the apartment, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters.
From there, 22-year-old Elliot Rodger allegedly drove to a sorority on the campus, where he shot three female passersby, two of whom would later die from their injuries. The suspect then allegedly shot a third victim to death outside of a nearby deli and ran over pedestrians and cyclists as he fled the scene in a black BMW.
Rodger engaged police in a shootout before he died from what authorities said appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Rodger was reportedly under psychiatric care and “diagnosed with ‘highly functional Asperger’s syndrome’ as a child, the BBC reported.
An unnamed source close to the family told the LA Times one of Rodger’s parents contacted police last month over concerns about videos he posted online that threatened violence. Washington Post reporter Phillip Bump said police told him they investigated Rodger but concluded he was not dangerous.
Rodger apparently filmed himself lamenting his social status and the alleged mistreatment from females he said pushed him to the massacre and posted it online:
In one portion of the video, entitled “Retribution,” Rodger said “if i can’t have you, girls, I will destroy you.” He specifically referenced a group of sorority girls he planned to target.
"I'll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you. You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one, the true alpha male."
"I will be a god compared to you. You will all be animals. You are animals, and I will slaughter you like animals. I hate all of you. Humanity is a disgusting, wretched, depraved species."
"Yes, after I have annihilated every single girl in the sorority house I'll take to the streets of Isla Vista and slay every single person I see there."
Authorities said they also recovered a 140-page “manifesto” written by Rodger entitled “My Twisted World.”
Three victims have been named, as of late Saturday night: sorority sisters Veronika Weiss and Katie Cooper, both 19, and Christopher Martinez, 20, an only child. Four
The victims found in Rodger’s apartment have not yet been publicly identified.
Thirteen other people were injured, and one underwent surgery for a life-threatening condition.
