A gunman armed with a rifle shot and killed a student and injured a teacher at a high school in Troutdale, Ore., officials said.
The victim was 14-year-old freshman Emilio Hoffman who was shot and killed in the boys locker room, according to Fox News.
Officials said they found the suspect dead on a school bathroom toilet and that he likely killed himself. Authorities have identified the suspect as a male teenager, but have not released his name. According to the Associated Press, authorities were in the process of notifiying the families of the gunman and the victim.
CBS News is reporting the shooter was a student.
“This is a very sad day for the city of Troutdale and the Reynolds School District,” Troutdale police chief Scott Anderson said. “A gunman entered the high school this morning, shot one student. Unfortunately that student has died.”
The teacher suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at the scene, Anderson said.
Law enforcement agencies responded to a report of shots fired at Reynolds High School at 8:07 a.m. PST, according to the Multnomah County sheriff’s office. The school was put on lockdown and students said they were told to quietly go to their classrooms, according to the AP. Multiple agencies evacuated the students and staff.
“This has been an unsettling day for our precious city,” Troutdale Mayor Doug Daoust said. “I am very impressed with how the police handled this whole operation.”
During the evacuation, a gun was found on one person, but it was determined that person was not involved in the shooting, Anderson said.
Parents were reunited with their children at the Wood Village Fred Meyer shopping center, located close to the school.
TV news showed students being led from the school with their hands on their heads. KATU-TV reported a LifeFlight helicopter was at the school and that police officers surrounded the building with guns drawn.
Anderson said law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the incident.
“I’m very very sorry for the family, and for all the students, and everybody who will be impacted by this tragic incident,” Anderson said.
Reynolds School District Superintendent Linda Florence said mental health services would be provided to students and those affected by the incident, and that parents would be given school closure information.
“This is such a tragedy and my heart goes out to the individuals involved and to their parents,” Florence said.
Reynolds High School has about 2,800 students and is the second-largest high school in Oregon, according to the AP.
The Tuesday shooting was the first fatal school shooting in Oregon since May 1998 when 15-year-old Kip Kinkel killed two students and wounded 25 others at Thurston High School in Springfield near Eugene. He killed his parents prior to the attack and is serving a 111-year prison sentence.

The Troutdale shooting comes on the heels of other recent mass shootings, including six shot dead in Isla Vista, Calif., on May 23, and one killed when a gunman opened fire at Seattle Pacific University on June 5.
