What would US currency look like if Beyonce’s face were on the $20 bill, instead of the inglorious Andrew Jackson’s? Or if Elizabeth Cady Stanton replaced Thomas Jefferson on the nickel?
There are currently no women pictured on any US currency, a fact President Obama acknowledged in a Kansas City speech on Wednesday:
Yes, there’s the Sacagawea golden dollar and the Susan B. Anthony silver dollar. But those coins are both discontinued, and we don’t expect many people would rather carry around a hundred Sacagaweas instead of one crisp Benjamin.
After Obama’s comment, Twitter exploded with ideas for the new lady currency. Suggestions included Janet Yellen, Nancy Reagan, Rosa Parks, and, of course, Queen Bey.
Obama brought up the issue in the context of addressing Congressional inaction around fair pay for women. “I want my daughters to have the same opportunities as anybody’s sons,” he told the Kansas City crowd.
So does that mean we might be seeing Sasha and Malia nickels and dimes in the not-too-distant future?
If so, hand me my wallet. I need some change.
